Another interesting class! Last night we were treated to a talk by the public defender’s office. If we’re ever stopped by a police officer, we’ll know what to say and what not to say, what they can do and what they can’t do. Not that I plan to get stopped or anything. But then, with dead bodies showing up all over the place in my stories, I might just get stopped for suspicious behavior or something.
We learned there were a number of reasons you could be stopped by an officer. Some of those included probable cause, Terry seizure and community care taking. We also learned you could be arrested under a pretext arrest in the city I live in. A pretext arrest is when they arrest you for one thing when they’re looking at you for your connection with something else. However, in our neighboring city, you can’t be arrested under a pretext arrest.
We also learned, that unless the laws change, come January we’ll be allowed to carry a non-concealed weapon. Look out now, Leeza will be walking down the streets with a 38 strapped to her hip! Don’t mess with me!
